What it is
The Water Sleeping Mask is probably Laneige’s best-known product worldwide. It’s a gel you apply as the last step at night and leave on while you sleep. Olive Young sells a 70ml jar; the listing we checked added a 40ml refill pouch and two minis.
The Korean ingredient list starts with water, butylene glycol, glycerin and trehalose, then silicones and squalane. Further down are lactobacillus ferment lysate, niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, evening primrose oil, beta-glucan, ceramide NP and several sugar-based moisturisers such as xylitol and raffinose. It also contains fragrance.

What the ingredients do
Most of the work is done by humectants: butylene glycol, glycerin, trehalose and the sugar ingredients draw water into the skin’s surface. Squalane and the silicones form a thin film on top, so that water stays put overnight. That’s why skin tends to look plumper in the morning.
Niacinamide supports an even tone and a healthy barrier over time. Lactobacillus ferment and beta-glucan are soothing, skin-conditioning extras. Ceramide NP appears near the end, so it’s a small supporting amount.
How to use it
Laneige’s directions: in the evening, after cleansing, apply your toner and emulsion, then spread a thick layer of the mask before bed. Rinse it off with water the next morning.
You can use it nightly or two or three times a week. On long flights, a thin layer also works as a quick moisture boost.
How it compares

Yes. The Korean list includes fragrance, plus limonene and linalool, which are fragrance components.
Can it replace my night cream?
Laneige's directions put it after toner and emulsion. Oily skin often finds it's enough on its own; dry skin usually keeps a moisturiser underneath.
Do I need to rinse it off?
Yes, rinse with water in the morning.
