How much K-beauty can you bring home from Korea?
Published 23 October 2026 · Seoul Price Check
For most travellers, a skincare haul fits comfortably inside the duty-free allowance: $800 per person for US residents and £390 for travellers arriving in Great Britain. The practical limit is your luggage: liquids over 100ml must go in checked bags.
US: the $800 personal exemption
US residents returning from abroad can usually bring back $800 worth of goods per person duty-free, as long as the items are for personal use, you were away for at least 48 hours, and you have not used the exemption in the past 30 days. Declare what you bought when you arrive. Going over $800 does not make the haul illegal; you pay duty on the amount above the exemption.
For scale: 10 bestselling products from this site come to about $120 to $200 at Seoul prices.
Sunscreen note. In the US, sunscreen is regulated as an over-the-counter drug, which is why some Korean brands sell a different sunscreen formula in the US, or none at all. Bringing a reasonable amount for your own use is normal. Buying many tubes to resell is a different matter and not something we cover.
UK: the £390 allowance
Travellers arriving in Great Britain can bring £390 of “other goods” (which covers cosmetics) without paying tax or duty, or £270 if you arrive by private plane or private boat. Source: GOV.UK, bringing goods into Great Britain, checked 23 October 2026.
If your goods are worth more than the allowance, you declare them and pay on the full value of the item that takes you over, so do the maths before buying that last luxury cream. Rules for Northern Ireland differ; check GOV.UK if that is where you land.
Carry-on liquids: the 100ml rule
Incheon and Gimpo, like most airports, apply the international carry-on rule: liquids, gels and creams in containers of 100ml or less, all fitting in one clear resealable bag of about 1 litre. A 150ml toner or a 200ml cleanser has to go in your checked bag, even if it is half empty.
Things travellers forget count as liquids: cleansing balm, sleeping masks, cushion compacts, lip tints and gel patches in liquid. Pimple patches and dry sheet-mask packaging are fine. Sheet masks soaked in essence can be treated as liquids at security; pack them in checked luggage to be safe.
Rules at your transit airport can be stricter than in Korea, so if you change planes, follow the stricter rule.
Packing a haul
- Put liquids in checked luggage, inside a zip bag in case a cap loosens with the pressure change.
- Keep boxes if you have space. They protect glass droppers. Without boxes, wrap droppers in clothes.
- Spray bottles and aerosols: non-aerosol mists are fine in checked bags. Aerosol sprays are allowed in limited quantities only; check your airline.
- Leave room. Most people buy more than planned. A foldable bag or the space you free by bringing travel-size toiletries both help.
Is shipping home a better idea?
For most people, no. International shipping from Korea costs more than the saving on a typical haul, and since the US ended its $800 duty-free rule for mailed packages in August 2025, parcels from abroad can attract duty at the border. Carrying it in your suitcase is simpler and cheaper.
Common questions
Do I have to declare cosmetics? In the US, you declare everything you bought abroad on arrival. In the UK, you use the red channel only if you are over your allowance or carrying restricted goods.
Does buying duty-free at the airport change my home allowance? No. Airport duty-free purchases still count toward your home country’s allowance when you arrive.
