AXIS-Y

Dark Spot Correcting Glow Serum

AXIS-Y's best-known serum: a light, glowy niacinamide serum with squalane, sea buckthorn, papaya, rice bran and a little glutathione, aimed at post-breakout marks and uneven tone.

Buyer verdictA solid, gentle niacinamide serum for dark marks and dullness, with a nicer, glowier feel than most. It works slowly, like all niacinamide products. Seoul is barely cheaper than Amazon, so only pick it up on an Olive Young promotion.

What it is

AXIS-Y is a Korean brand built around a small range of products, and this serum is its signature. It’s a light, slightly milky serum in a 50ml bottle. The aim is to fade the brown and red marks that breakouts leave behind and give skin a brighter, glowier look. Korea registers it as a functional cosmetic for brightening.

The Korean ingredient list puts niacinamide third, after water and glycerin. Then come humectants (propanediol, butylene glycol, erythritol), sodium hyaluronate and squalane, followed by a set of plant extracts: rice bran, calendula, papaya, sea buckthorn and acerola. Further down are glutathione, allantoin and, at the very end, rosemary leaf oil.

Who it suits (and who should skip it)

Good pick if

  • You have marks left by old breakouts and want a gentle daily serum
  • Your skin looks dull or uneven, and you’d like a soft glow
  • Acids or strong vitamin C serums irritate your skin

Skip it if

  • You want a fast, strong dark-spot treatment; consider tranexamic acid or prescription options
  • Your skin reacts to essential oils, even in small amounts
  • You already use a high-strength niacinamide serum; doubling up adds little

What the ingredients do

Niacinamide (vitamin B3) is one of the best-researched brightening ingredients. It reduces the transfer of pigment to the skin’s surface, so marks fade gradually. It also calms redness and supports the barrier, which is why it suits breakout-prone skin.

Squalane gives the serum its glow and keeps it from feeling sticky. The fruit extracts are part of the brand’s “glow” story and add antioxidants, but they’re supporting players. Glutathione is a popular antioxidant in Korean brightening products. Here it’s in a small amount.

Sodium hyaluronate and allantoin keep the formula hydrating and soothing.

How to use it

AXIS-Y’s directions: after toner, spread a suitable amount evenly over the skin. A few drops are enough. For extra care at night, the brand suggests layering a second coat, like a sleeping pack.

Use it morning and night, and always finish with sunscreen during the day. Marks won’t fade if they keep getting darkened by the sun.

How it compares

Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% is the stronger option, with a stated niacinamide strength plus tranexamic acid. Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum uses alpha-arbutin for a similar goal. SKIN1004 Tone Brightening Capsule Ampoule combines niacinamide, tranexamic acid and a vitamin C derivative.

Our serum buying guide explains how to choose between them.

Is it worth buying in Seoul?

Not really, at regular price. Olive Young sells the same 50ml bottle as Amazon US and UK, and the Seoul price is only a few percent lower. It’s worth buying in Seoul during an Olive Young promotion, or if you want it for the trip. Otherwise, buying at home costs about the same.

At 50ml, it fits in a carry-on liquids bag.

FAQ

How much niacinamide is in it?

AXIS-Y doesn't state a percentage on the Korean label, but niacinamide is the third ingredient, after water and glycerin, so it's a meaningful amount.

Does it contain fragrance?

There's no added fragrance on the Korean list, but it does contain a little rosemary leaf oil, an essential oil. Sensitive skin should patch-test.

How long until marks fade?

Give niacinamide at least 8 to 12 weeks of daily use. Wearing sunscreen every day matters as much as the serum, because sun darkens marks.

Can I use it with vitamin C or retinol?

Yes. Niacinamide pairs well with most actives. Apply the thinner product first, and add new actives one at a time.
