Korean Serums in Seoul: How to Pick One That Does Something

Published 24 October 2026 · Seoul Price Check

The serum section is where Olive Young shopping gets overwhelming. Serums, ampoules and essences sit side by side, many with a single hero ingredient on the label and a “1st place” sticker on the shelf. Most are perfectly nice. Far fewer do the specific job you’re buying them for.

The good news is that Korean labels make choosing easier than you’d think. Korean products must list every ingredient, and many state the exact amount of their key ingredient in percent or ppm. Reading those numbers tells you more than any shelf sticker.

Serum, ampoule or essence?

In Korea, these names are about marketing more than rules. Roughly:

  • Essences tend to be thin and watery, used right after toner.
  • Serums are a little thicker and more targeted.
  • Ampoules are marketed as the most concentrated, often in small dropper bottles.

In practice, the formulas overlap a lot. Choose by what’s in the bottle, not by what it’s called.

How to read the strength on a Korean label

Turn the box over and look for the full ingredient list (전성분). Two things matter:

  1. Position. Ingredients are listed from most to least, down to 1%. Below that, the order is free. An ingredient in the top five is a major part of the formula. One near the end is usually a small extra.
  2. Stated amounts. Many Korean brands print amounts in brackets. 10,000 ppm is 1%, and 100,000 ppm is 10%. So “병풀추출물 100,000ppm” means 10% centella extract.

Those numbers can surprise you. Mixsoon Centella Asiatica Essence is often described as pure centella, but the Korean label shows water first and centella extract at 10%. Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum has propolis at 7.05%, fifth on the list, not first. Neither is a bad product; the numbers just help you set expectations.

Pick by the job you want done

Calming red, reactive or over-treated skin

Look for centella (병풀), mugwort (쑥), panthenol and short ingredient lists.

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule is the best value here: seven ingredients, no fragrance, and gentle enough to use alongside strong actives. Mixsoon is even shorter, at three ingredients, but costs more and is often cheaper on Amazon US than in Seoul. I’m From Mugwort Essence is 40% mugwort extract with nine ingredients in total.

Dark spots and post-acne marks

Look for niacinamide, tranexamic acid (트라넥사믹애씨드), alpha-arbutin (알파-알부틴) and stated percentages.

Anua Niacinamide 10% + TXA 4% is the strongest mainstream option, with both amounts printed on the bottle. Build up slowly, because 10% niacinamide can tingle. Beauty of Joseon Glow Deep Serum is the gentle alternative, with 2% alpha-arbutin in a base that’s 68.6% rice bran water.

Products registered in Korea as functional cosmetics for brightening (미백 기능성) have had their brightening ingredient reviewed by Korea’s food and drug regulator. That’s a useful signal, though not a promise of results.

Oily skin and breakouts

Look for niacinamide, propolis, betaine salicylate or salicylic acid.

Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum combines propolis, niacinamide and a little betaine salicylate. It’s one of the best-value serums for oily skin, unless you react to bee products. For genuinely stubborn acne, a serum is a supporting step. A proper treatment such as benzoyl peroxide or adapalene from a pharmacy will do more.

Vitamin C and glow

Vitamin C comes in many forms. Pure ascorbic acid (아스코빅애씨드) is the most potent and least stable. Derivatives such as ascorbyl glucoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid are gentler.

Goodal Green Tangerine Vita C Serum is a pleasant daily brightener, but its four vitamin C forms are all in the second half of the list, and it contains citrus essential oils. Niacinamide does most of the work. For a light glow and hydration without strong actives, Celimax Noni Energy Ampoule is good value in Seoul’s larger 80ml size.

Fine lines and texture

Retinol (레티놀) is the best-studied option without a prescription. COSRX The Retinol 0.1 Cream states its strength and is fragrance-free. Some By Mi Retinol Intense Reactivating Serum adds retinal and bakuchiol, but has fragrance. See our retinol guide before you start.

Products registered as wrinkle-care functional cosmetics (주름개선 기능성) usually contain adenosine or retinol. Adenosine is gentle and pleasant, but it’s a mild ingredient.

The PDRN and “microneedle” trend

Korea’s current craze is PDRN (often listed as sodium DNA) and spicule serums that create a prickly feeling. VT Reedle Shot 300 uses silica spicules coated with centella. The prickle is real and some people love the effect on texture, but it isn’t for sensitive or broken skin. Start with VT’s own directions, which call for a few nights a week at first.

How many serums do you need?

Usually one or two. A sensible combination is one calming or hydrating serum you can use every day, plus one active for your main concern, such as brightening, blemishes or retinol. Layering five serums mostly adds cost and the chance of irritation.

When you do layer, go from thinnest to thickest. Apply the active you care about most first, onto clean skin after toner.

Is Seoul cheaper for serums?

Mostly, yes. Serums are where Olive Young promotions are deepest. Several popular serums worked out 30% to 58% below Amazon US when we checked. There are exceptions, and the product pages say so. Mixsoon’s essence, for example, is currently cheaper on Amazon US than at Olive Young’s regular price.

Watch the bottle sizes. Korean and export sizes often differ, and our price boxes always compare per ml. Serums are small and light, which makes them ideal for carry-on bags. Most are 30ml to 50ml, under the 100ml liquid limit.
