Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner
A short, gentle hydrating toner with betaine, black rice and bamboo extracts, red ginseng and 600 ppm hyaluronic acid, lightly scented with lavender oil.
Buyer verdictA comfortable, no-drama hydrating toner for dry and normal skin. This Korean version contains lavender oil, so pick Haruharu's unscented version if you avoid fragrance. The Seoul saving is small, but Olive Young's 30ml bonus makes it a fair buy.

What it is
Haruharu Wonder is a smaller Korean brand known for short ingredient lists and eco-minded packaging. The Black Rice Hyaluronic Toner is its best-known product: a 150ml hydrating toner with a slightly viscous feel.
The Korean ingredient list is short by K-beauty standards. After water come betaine, glycerin and propanediol as the main hydrators. Then the line’s signature extracts: black rice and bamboo shoot, each listed at 2,000 ppm. Aspergillus ferment, red ginseng, scutellaria and hyaluronic acid (600 ppm) follow, with beta-glucan for comfort. Near the end there’s a little ethanol and lavender oil.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- Your skin feels dry or tight after cleansing
- You want a simple toner that layers well under anything
- You prefer brands with shorter, easy-to-read ingredient lists
Skip it if
- You avoid essential oils; look for Haruharu’s unscented version instead
- You want a toner that also exfoliates or targets acne
- You’re very oily and find viscous toners heavy
What the ingredients do
Betaine is a gentle humectant that also helps skin hold onto water, which is why the toner feels more hydrating than its short list suggests. Glycerin and propanediol do the rest of the basic moisturising.
Black rice is rich in anthocyanins, the antioxidant pigments that make it dark purple. Bamboo shoot extract adds a softening feel. Both are listed with exact amounts, which tells you they’re meaningful in the formula, even if the evidence for them is lighter than for proven actives.
Hyaluronic acid and beta-glucan add a cushion of hydration. Red ginseng and aspergillus ferment are small extras. The lavender oil gives a faint scent, and linalool comes with it.
How to use it
Haruharu’s directions are to soak a cotton pad, wipe it gently over the face, then pat in what’s left. You can also skip the pad and press it in with your hands, which wastes less product. Follow with serum and moisturiser.
It’s gentle enough for morning and night. Use the bottle within 6 months of opening, as the label says.
How it compares
Isntree Hyaluronic Acid Toner is the closest fragrance-free alternative, with a similar slightly thick texture. Torriden DIVE-IN Toner is more watery and hyaluronic-focused. I’m From Rice Toner is milkier and richer, for skin that wants more nourishment.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
It’s a small saving rather than a big one. The Seoul sale price is only a little below Amazon US for the same 150ml bottle. But Olive Young currently adds a 30ml bonus bottle, which our price box doesn’t count, so the real value is better than the headline.
Make sure you check the label in store: the scented and unscented versions look similar. One bottle clears the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum.
FAQ
Is it fragrance-free?
Not this version. The Korean label lists lavender oil and linalool near the end. Haruharu also sells an unscented version, so check the label if you avoid fragrance.
Does it contain alcohol?
Ethanol is listed near the end, after most of the extracts, so it's a small amount. Most people won't notice any drying effect.
Does it exfoliate?
No. There are no exfoliating acids. It's a hydrating toner only.
How quickly should I use it?
The Korean label says to use it within 6 months of opening, which is shorter than many toners.
