Cellup Gel to Water Cleanser

A very gentle gel cleanser that turns watery as you massage it, using mild emulsifiers and plant saponins instead of foaming surfactants, made for morning cleansing and sensitive skin.

Buyer verdictOne of the gentlest cleansers at Olive Young, ideal for morning cleansing or dry, sensitive skin. It won't remove heavy sunscreen or makeup on its own. Seoul is about a third below Amazon US, though one bottle is under the tax refund minimum.

What it is

Lagom is a Korean brand named after the Swedish idea of “just the right amount”. Cellup Gel to Water Cleanser is its best-known product: a clear gel in a 170ml tube that melts into a watery texture as you massage it.

The Korean ingredient list shows why it’s so gentle. Instead of the usual foaming surfactants, it uses PEG-6 caprylic/capric glycerides, a mild oil-dissolving cleanser often found in micellar waters, plus polyglyceryl-4 caprate and polyglyceryl-6 caprylate. Glycerin and urea keep skin hydrated. Near the end are purslane, soapwort leaf and soapberry extracts. Fragrance is listed.

Who it suits (and who should skip it)

Good pick if

  • You want a gentle morning cleanser that won’t strip your skin
  • Your skin is dry, sensitive or feels tight after foaming washes
  • You like a slippery gel that rinses away cleanly

Skip it if

  • You want one cleanser to remove waterproof sunscreen and makeup
  • You love a rich, foamy lather
  • You avoid fragrance

What the ingredients do

PEG-6 caprylic/capric glycerides is the key. It can dissolve oil and light makeup, but it’s far milder than the surfactants in a typical foam. The polyglyceryl esters add gentle cleansing power and help everything rinse off.

Glycerin and urea are humectants. They help skin keep its moisture while you cleanse, so it doesn’t feel tight afterwards. Soapwort and soapberry contain saponins, natural soap-like compounds that people have used for washing for centuries. Here they’re in small amounts. Purslane adds a little calm.

How to use it

Lagom gives two uses. As a morning cleanser, apply to a dry or damp face, avoiding the eyes and mouth, and massage gently to lift overnight oil and sweat. Then rinse with lukewarm water. As a first cleanser at night, massage it onto a dry face, then rinse or wipe it off with a soft tissue or cotton pad.

At night, follow with a second cleanser if you wore water-resistant sunscreen.

How it compares

COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is the classic morning gel, with a little more cleansing power and a light foam. Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser is a gentle creamy foam. Beauty of Joseon Green Plum Cleanser is a gel-to-foam option with a fresher finish.

Is it worth buying in Seoul?

Yes. Olive Young sells the same 170ml tube as Amazon US, and Seoul works out about a third cheaper. Amazon UK mostly lists a 220ml tube at a much higher price; per ml, Seoul is less than half.

At around ₩14,400, one tube is just below the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum, so add any small item to the same receipt.

FAQ

Does it foam?

No, or barely. It's a gel that turns watery, so it feels more like a micellar cleanser than a foam.

Does it contain fragrance?

Yes. Fragrance is listed in the middle of the Korean ingredient list.

Can it remove makeup?

Light makeup and sunscreen, yes. Lagom suggests it can also be used as a first cleanser and tissued off. For waterproof sunscreen or heavy makeup, a cleansing oil works better.

Is it good for oily skin?

In the morning, yes. At night, oily skin may want a foam as a second cleanse after oil.
