Double Cleansing: What to Buy in Seoul for the Korean Two-Step
Published 24 October 2026 · Seoul Price Check
Double cleansing is the most widely copied habit in Korean skincare. The idea is simple: first an oil-based cleanser to dissolve sunscreen and makeup, then a water-based cleanser to wash everything away. Olive Young has whole aisles for both steps, and cleansers are among the best-value things you can buy in Seoul.
This guide explains who really needs both steps, how the different formats work, and what to look for on the label.
Why two steps?
Modern sunscreens and long-wear makeup are designed to resist water and sweat. A foaming cleanser alone can leave some behind, especially water-resistant sunscreen. Oil dissolves oil, so a cleansing oil or balm breaks those films down first. The second, water-based cleanser then removes the oily residue and any leftover sweat and dirt.
Who needs it: anyone who wears daily sunscreen, makeup or both. That’s most people.
Who doesn’t: if you wore no sunscreen or makeup, one gentle cleanse is enough. In the morning, most people need only one step, or even just water.
Step one: balm or oil?
Both do the same job. The difference is texture and convenience.
Cleansing balms are solid in the tub and melt on contact. They’re less messy to travel with and feel cushiony.
- Banila Co Clean It Zero Original is the classic. It’s built on light esters, PEG emulsifiers and wax, with a single added fragrance, and in Seoul it costs about half the Amazon price.
- Heimish All Clean Balm has a similar sherbet texture, with a spa-like scent from a blend of essential oils. Sensitive skin should be careful with it.
Cleansing oils are liquid and pumpable, and they spread quickly over the whole face.
- Numbuzin No.1 Clear Cleansing Oil has a short, 13-ingredient formula built on corn oil. Olive Young sells an exclusive 400ml jumbo bottle. It’s fragranced.
- Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil is the popular choice for oily, pore-conscious skin.
The step that matters most: emulsifying
A good cleansing oil or balm contains emulsifiers, often PEG or sorbitan compounds on the label, that turn it milky when you add water. That’s what lets it rinse clean.
The technique is the same for all of them:
- Apply to a dry face with dry hands.
- Massage for about a minute until makeup and sunscreen melt.
- Wet your hands and keep massaging until it turns milky. This takes 20 to 30 seconds.
- Rinse well with lukewarm water.
Skipping the milky step is the most common reason people find oil cleansers greasy or blame them for breakouts.
Step two: foam or gel?
The second cleanser should be gentle. Its job is to finish, not to strip.
Creamy foams feel thorough and satisfying. Look for mild surfactants such as sodium cocoyl isethionate (소듐코코일이세티오네이트) and amino-acid types like potassium cocoyl glycinate. Harsher sulfates are less common in Korean cleansers now, but check the first few ingredients.
- Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser is gentle and marketed as weakly acidic, with deep sea water and panthenol. It’s about half the Amazon US price.
- SKIN1004 Centella Ampoule Foam uses a very similar mild surfactant system, with centella and no fragrance.
Gels are lighter and suit oily skin or morning cleansing.
- COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is the classic light gel.
- Lagom Cellup Gel to Water Cleanser is among the gentlest at Olive Young. It barely foams and uses mild, micellar-style cleansers. It’s ideal for dry or sensitive skin in the morning, though it contains fragrance.
How to tell if your cleanser is too harsh
Your skin shouldn’t feel tight, squeaky or itchy after cleansing. If it does:
- switch to a milder second cleanser, or a gel or cream instead of a foam
- cut the second cleanse in the morning
- shorten the time: 30 to 60 seconds of massage is plenty
- use lukewarm water, not hot
Over-cleansing is one of the most common causes of a damaged skin barrier. If your skin is red and sensitive, simplify your cleansing before you buy more serums.
A simple routine
Evening, with sunscreen or makeup: balm or oil, then a gentle foam or gel.
Evening, bare skin: a gentle foam or gel only.
Morning: a gentle gel, or just water if your skin is dry.
Buying cleansers in Seoul
Cleansers are some of the most reliable savings at Olive Young. Several popular ones work out 30% to 55% below Amazon in our checks, and many come with bonus sizes. They’re also cheap enough that one tube on its own often won’t reach the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum. Bundle them with other products on the same receipt.
Most cleansers over 100ml need to go in checked luggage. Balms count as gels at airport security too.
