Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal
Beauty of Joseon's ginseng and retinal eye cream-serum: a light emulsion with niacinamide, adenosine, ginseng extract and a small amount of retinal, a retinoid one step from retinoic acid.
Buyer verdictA gentle, good-value first retinoid for the eye area, with a soft cream texture that suits most skin. It's not a strong treatment, and sensitive eyelids should still introduce it slowly. In Seoul it costs well under the Amazon price.

What it is
Beauty of Joseon is best known for its rice sunscreen, and its Revive line is its approach to anti-ageing. This 30ml tube is sold abroad as Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal. In Korea, Olive Young lists it as a ginseng eye cream. It’s a light, white cream that spreads easily around the eyes.
The Korean ingredient list starts with water, glycerin and humectants, then a set of light emollients. Niacinamide is seventh. Ginseng extract appears mid-list, followed by macadamia oil, adenosine, cholesterol and cacao extract. Retinal comes later, then hyaluronate, ceramide NP and palmitoyl tripeptide-5 near the end.
Korea registers it as a functional cosmetic, and its directions note that you can also use it on other areas where wrinkles bother you.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- You want to try a retinoid around the eyes without jumping to a strong formula
- You have early fine lines or dryness around the eyes
- You prefer a light cream that doesn’t make concealer slide
Skip it if
- You’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you’ve been told to avoid retinoids
- Your eyelids are very reactive or prone to eczema
- You want fast, dramatic results on deep lines or dark circles
What the ingredients do
Retinal (retinaldehyde) is a retinoid that converts to retinoic acid in one step, so it’s considered more effective than retinol at the same strength. Here it’s in a small amount, which makes sense for the thin skin around the eyes. Expect gradual smoothing of fine lines over a couple of months, not overnight changes.
Niacinamide supports the skin barrier and evens tone. Adenosine is the ingredient Korea’s regulator accepts for wrinkle-care claims. Ginseng extract is the brand’s signature, a supporting ingredient rather than the active.
Macadamia oil, cholesterol and ceramide NP help offset the dryness retinoids can cause. Palmitoyl tripeptide-5 is a peptide in a small amount.
How to use it
Beauty of Joseon’s directions: take a small amount, spread it around the eyes and let it absorb. A grain-of-rice amount is enough for both eyes. Pat it on the orbital bone rather than right at the lash line or on the eyelid itself.
Start with two or three nights a week, then build up if your skin is comfortable. If you use it in the morning, the brand says to wear sunscreen. Don’t layer it with another retinoid in the same area.
How it compares
AHC Essential Real Eye Cream for Face is a richer, retinoid-free eye cream for people who mostly want moisture. COSRX The Retinol 0.1 Cream is a face retinol with a stated strength, if you’d rather treat the whole face with one product.
See our retinol guide for beginners for how to start retinoids safely.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
Yes. Olive Young sells the same 30ml tube that Amazon US and UK list, and Seoul’s price is well under both. One tube is below the ₩15,000 tax refund minimum, so add it to a bigger basket.
At 30ml, it fits easily in a carry-on liquids bag.
FAQ
Is it an eye serum or an eye cream?
Both names are used. It's sold abroad as Revive Eye Serum: Ginseng + Retinal, while Olive Young lists it as an eye cream (인삼 아이크림). The texture sits in between: a light cream.
How strong is the retinal?
Beauty of Joseon doesn't state a percentage, and retinal appears late in the Korean ingredient list, so it's a low amount. That suits the thin eye-area skin, but it also means results build slowly.
Can I use it in the daytime?
Beauty of Joseon allows it, but its directions say to use sunscreen when you do. Many people keep retinoids for night only.
Can I use it while pregnant?
Retinoids, including retinal, are usually avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Check with your doctor first.
