What it is
First Care Activating Serum, called 윤조에센스 (Yunjo Essence) in Korea, is Sulwhasoo’s best-known product. It’s a serum you apply first, straight after cleansing, to prepare skin for the rest of the routine. Sulwhasoo is Amorepacific’s luxury brand built around Korean herbal tradition. The product has been updated several times over the years, so check the generation on the box.
Olive Young sells it in 30ml, 60ml and 90ml. The 90ml set we checked also came with a 50ml cleansing foam, an 8ml mini of the serum and a 5ml cream sample.
The Korean ingredient list starts with water, denatured alcohol, butylene glycol, betaine and 1,2-hexanediol. The herbal blend comes later and includes Scutellaria baicalensis root, rehmannia root, peony root, Solomon’s seal, lotus, jujube, ginseng and Madonna lily extracts. There’s also honey, adenosine, madecassoside, 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid and fragrance.
Who it suits (and who should skip it)
Good pick if
- You enjoy a luxury, scented routine and a beautiful bottle
- You’re buying a gift, especially for a parent
- Your skin is normal or dry and isn’t sensitive to fragrance or alcohol
Skip it if
- Your skin reacts to fragrance or alcohol
- You want strong actives such as retinol or high-strength vitamin C
- You’re on a budget; there are cheaper first-step essences
What the ingredients do
Butylene glycol, betaine and propanediol are humectants that give the serum its hydrating, cushiony feel. Denatured alcohol high on the list helps the texture absorb quickly and feel light, but it can be drying or irritating for some skin.
The herbal extracts are the identity of the brand. Ingredients like rehmannia, peony and ginseng come from traditional Korean medicine, and some have antioxidant or soothing properties in lab studies, but there isn’t strong evidence for what this blend does on the face. Adenosine is the wrinkle-care ingredient that gives the functional registration. Madecassoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid appear in small amounts.
How to use it
Sulwhasoo’s directions: take some out, spread it over the whole face, then press gently so it absorbs. Use it right after cleansing, morning and night, before your toner or other serums.
How it compares
Missha Time Revolution First Treatment Essence is the budget first-step essence. Numbuzin No.3 Skin Softening Serum is a cheaper glow serum with fermented ingredients. Within Sulwhasoo, the Concentrated Ginseng Renewing Cream is the richer anti-ageing step.
Is it worth buying in Seoul?
Mixed. In our latest check, Seoul beat Amazon UK on the same 90ml size, and the set comes with useful extras. But the Amazon US listing we found was a larger bottle that worked out cheaper per ml than Seoul. If you’re from the US, compare duty-free and Olive Young prices before you buy, or treat it as a gift purchase rather than a saving.
The 90ml bottle fits the carry-on liquids limit, but the boxed set is bulky.
FAQ
Is it fragrance-free?
No. It lists fragrance plus fragrance components (limonene, linalool, citronellol, citral, geraniol), and denatured alcohol is second on the list. Sensitive skin should patch test.
Is it cheaper at duty-free?
Sometimes. Sulwhasoo is a duty-free staple, so compare the airport or downtown duty-free price with Olive Young before buying.
Is it a functional cosmetic?
Yes. The Korean label says it passed Korea's functional cosmetic review, which for this product relates to wrinkle care.
